Gum Inflammation

Healthy gums are pale pink in colour, fill in the space between teeth and do not bleed when touched.
Gingivitis means the gums are inflamed. The gums are red, swollen and bleed easily. If the inflammation is not cured, it can spread to the jaw and in phases lead to bone degeneration.
The resulting parodontitis can develop unoticed.
Inflammation of the gum (gingivitis) and of the periodontium (parodontitis) number among the most common human illnesses. In Germany around 95% (!) of 18 year-olds have gingivitis.
With co-operation from the patient, the treatment is relatively easy. As long as no general diseases have played a part in the development of the inflammation, the healing process can be quick. During the visits the extent of the inflammation is assessed. Nutrition advice, guidelines on brushing, professional cleaning and local application of fluoride are the tried and tested steps of the ususally successful and not uncomfortable treatment.
